July 2007
At the end of June Bush's "fast track" authority to
negotiate trade agreements with minimal input from Congress expired.
Over the last six years "fast track" has allowed this
Administration to negotiate one bad trade deal after another with
limited input and oversight from Congress. "Fast track"
helped President Bush push through flawed trade agreements such as
the Central America Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA).
House Democratic Leaders, led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have made
clear that they have no intention of extending the White House's
authority to pursue any more corporate-written trade deals. House
Democrats have also expressed their opposition to flawed deals
negotiated by the Administration with South Korea and Colombia. ...

Recently the Boilermakers sent out a
questionnaire to all declared presidential candidates,
both Democratic and Republican. The questionnaire asked
the candidates to respond to issues that are of major
importance to Boilermaker members and their families. We
asked that candidates respond no later than May 25, 2007.

Employee Free Choice Act
On June 26th a majority of the Senate voted in support of
the Employee Free Choice Act by a vote of 51-48. However,
opposition from a minority of Senators killed the bill's
chance to move forward. Under Senate procedures, sixty
votes were needed to move on to vote on the full bill. The
Senate may not have the 60 votes needed to pass the
Employee Free Choice Act, but Democrats showed that they
are united behind an agenda for our working families. We
must continue to fight for the passage of the Employee
Free Choice Act to insure that America's workers are able
to join a union. ...
